There are many different features to look at when you are buying a fax machine.
Fax Modem Speed
There is the speed of the data transfer, which refers to the fax modem. The higher the number, the faster the fax machine will send your documents. 14.4Kbps is the average speed.
Color or Black and White
It is nice to have a color fax machine to be able to fax documents in color. The only draw back is that the fax on the receiving end has to also be in color as well. Not as popular of a format just because of the costs involved.
Type of Printing
The fax can be an inkjet or laser printer. The quality is great in both types of fax machines. The laser printer would print much faster.
Copier
Most fax machines can also make copies. The copies are usually not that great, but they will do just fine for a quick copy of a document. If you are looking for a fax machine to make great copies, you might look into an all-in-one printer instead.
Dual Use
Some of the newer types of fax machines will also connect to your computer to be used as a printer.
Memory Store
Most fax machines will store incoming faxes if you run out of paper because you forgot to fill it up before you left the night before. This is a great feature, so that you do not lose any important documents. Some will store up to three hundred pages or more.
Fax Broadcasting
Some fax machines will broadcast faxes up to one hundred or more locations that you have pre-set into the fax machine. This is a great feature if you regularly fax the same documents to many different locations.
Paper Type
There are two different types of paper types that a fax machine can print to. There is the roll type which is usually a thin and flimsy type of paper which is not very professional. The other type uses the same inkjet or copier paper that you put inside of your printer or your copier.
