Remove Programs From Startup
Take a look in the bottom right corner of the computer screen, by the clock, on the start bar. Highlight each icon and take note of what program is running. Each of these programs are running and taking up system resources and processes. If any of these programs are not needed, then they need to be located and removed, so that they don't start at system start up. There are a couple of locations that they can be hiding.
One place they can be hiding is in the system startup folder:
If you have multiple users (profiles) on the system, you should check the startup directory of all of the profiles. To do this:
RIGHT CLICK on the START button.
Click EXPLORE.
DOUBLE CLICK on the C: Drive.
DOUBLE CLICK on DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS.
DOUBLE CLICK on the first profile name.
DOUBLE CLICK on START MENU.
DOUBLE CLICK on PROGRAMS.
DOUBLE CLICK on STARTUP.
Here you can remove any files that you know that are not needed. You would repeat this step for each user name listed in this directory, including the ALL USERS name.
If you have programs in this directory that are required for hardware or services to run make sure you leave them there. An example of some things that might need to stay may be from your internet service provider, programs for your printer, or for a scanner or other device. If you are not sure, then leave it there until you have time to look for what it is, and what it does, so you can tell if it is needed or not. You can start the program by clicking on them.
Reboot the computer and take note if there are any errors. Do not empty your recycle bin, until you know it is safe to do so. These are only shortcuts, so they do not take up any space at all. If you notice any errors, you can restore the file(s) from the recycle bin.
