The Quiet Computer
You have just finnished setting up your brand new computer, and turn it on for the first time. All of the research, all of the decision making, all of that planning, all of that excitement, all of that money, it all comes down to this. Your watch the system through the P.O.S.T screen, and through the starting Windows screen, you log in, and all of your drivers and devices load successfully. You start browsing through the machine's hard drive, and installing your programs and games, etc... You are so proud of your purchase, and happy that everything is working as it should. You reach the stage where you think that it seemed to go too smoothly, and are amazed that nothing went wrong. Then, ten minutes into your excitement, you start to hear this awful sound. It sounds like there is an airplane cruising over your house (sorry about the exaggeration). This, my friend, is the dreaded fans of aggrevation. You think that it will be ok, and as the days go by the fans seem to get louder and louder. You find yourself turning up the television or turning up your music. Until....you just can't take it anymore (or your neighbor tells you that he hears it too).
There are several fans in most systems that can be causing the problem, or compounding together to make the problem as bad as it is. The most typical source of a loud fan, in my experience, is when you buy a boxed processor that includes the heatsink and fan. My last purchase of a Pentium 4 Boxed Processor was the loudest fan that I have ever heard. The good news is that there is a way to fix this problem. You can replace the fans.
The first thing that you need to do is to open up the computer case, and track down which fan or fans are causing the problem. If it is a case fan, then you need to find the size of the fan which is measured in mm. If you need to convert inches to mm, then you need to search the internet for a conversion calculator. Other fans that may be causing your problem is the processor fan, the power supply fan, or even the fan on your video card or other device. Once you have found the source of the problem, then you can order new quieter fans and get them installed.
